During the heat of the summer, with our short shorts, sundresses and bikinis having silky smooth legs is critical. Here are some tips and tricks for achieving this.

Oldie but a Goodie-Shaving 101

To get the closet shave without razor bumps, follow these 5 easy steps.

1. Exfoliate-dead dry skin cells clog the razor and do not allow the razor to glide over the skin thus increasing nicks, bumps and rashes. Try these to achieve a smooth silky shave, Jan Marini exfoliating body wash, Glytone creamy wash and or any salt or sugar scrub like Philosophy Lemonade Scrub prior to reaching for the razor. Body washes free of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) will keep skin from being dehydrated and give the best result.

2. Soften and Hydrate- Ensure you are in the shower with steam for at least 3-5 min prior to shaving, This will allow the hairs to soften and allow the razor to get a clean close shave. Hydrate with a shaving cream prior, top picks include Whish Shaving Cream, Zirh shave cream and or a in expensive choice, hair conditioner like Suave, Loreal or similar (SLS free). Avoid soap at all costs, this will lead to disaster as it dehydrates the skin and does not allow the razor to glide. Worse yet, a dry shave.

3. Chose Your Weapon-Not all razors are created equal. Women have curves therefore we need a razor that has spring mounted blades to follow our curves. Also use one with moisturizing strips to lessen the irritation factor. Top picks include Gillette Venus and Shick Quattro for Women. Also go long in your strokes, short choppy techniques lead to more nicks and cuts and increase the risk of razor bumps and rashes.

4. Change Your Razors Often- at least one time weekly if shaving daily, when the blade gets dull it is sabotage for the entire process.

5. Moisturize- Immediately after toweling dry, apply a good layer of thick moisturizer that contains shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil or other natural ingredients to help seal in moisture. Top picks include, Cerave or Cetaphil cream, L Occitane Shea Butter Body Lotion and or Burts Bees Richly Replenishing Cocoa and Cupuacu Butters Body Lotion.

If shaving isnt for you, or you constantly battle razor bumps, try these newer more permanent alternatives.

Laser hair removal by a trained laser technician, preferably in a dermatology or skin care clinic. This technology focuses on the pigment (melanin) present in the hair follicles and uses laser energy to destroy the follicle and permanently reduce hair growth. It is a great choice to permanently reduce the amount of hair in the bikini, armpits, arms and or legs. It usually takes at least 3 treatments properly spaced and should be done at a reputable office as Lasers are medical devices. Cost has greatly reduced in the past few years but expect that each treatment per area will run about $50 to $100. Over time, the investment will pay off, no more waxing, tweezing, shaving, razor bumps and or rashes etc.

At home removal methods

The Tria-the first FDA cleared at home laser hair removal. It utilizes some of the same technology used by professionals at a fraction of the cost. $395. Takes at least 6 treatments per area but provides good results.

No!No! at home hair reduction device- this utilizes a thermodynamic wire to transmit heat to the hair and remove the hair. Similar to epilation done by estheticians. This method reduces hair regrowth over time and can be used on any area. Fairly easy to use with only mild stinging. Cost approx $300

Electric razors are another alternative and many have been designed to fit and follow the curves of woman. Although effective, often times a close smooth shave it not the result but a good choice in a pinch.
