The dangers and risks of UV radiation are becoming increasingly apparent. The two types of radiation are Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). UVB has long been associated with sunburn while UVA has been recognized as a deeper penetrating, more damaging form of radiation. Melanoma with a link to UVA radiation is fatal if not detected early. In 2008, statistics show that 1 American will die every 59 minutes of malignant melanoma, the most damaging form of skin cancer. UV radiation from tanning beds, sun lamps and the sun have a damaging effect on the immune system and increase your risk of skin cancer. Most sun lamps and tanning beds emit mainly UVA radiation, therefore causing deeper skin damage. Contrary to the claims of tanning parlors, although the beds emit less burning rays, tanning beds are not safe due to the high amounts of UVA. Tanning also causes premature aging of the skin causing blotchy skin, brown spots, wrinkling and change in the texture of the skin.
